For the last couple of months I've been working on designing vehicles for a brand new online cyberpunk roleplaying video game called DECIMATED.
It's been a bit of a journey, a real learning curve.
In January 2022 I handed in my notice at the marketing agency I'd worked at for almost a decade. I quit quite a senior position and a whole career in graphic design to become a concept artist. And hopefully a much happier person. I had 3 months to get my portfolio together and get organised, which is what I did. It was a scary time...
Just before I had to start putting the feelers out to get some work Fracture Labs got in touch saying they liked my stuff and would I be prepared to come on board to help design vehicles for DECIMATED.
This was perfect, a gift. During the online interview I was asked if I would be prepared to do an art test. I figured it would be experience... I had never worked as a concept artist before so even if I didn't get the job it'd be enjoyable and useful.
The brief was to design a pick up truck, one that had something different about it, that fitted into a cyberpunk world of deserts, rough terrain and abandoned cities. I spent two days coming up with 6 rough black and white designs, each very different from the other. I sent them back as soon as I could, used to the tight deadlines and pressure of the marketing agency, and they liked all of them.
